The People on the Outside

We all want to be on the inside, and very few people like being left out. To have the latest news, to be first to be invited to the party, to have the exclusive tickets that no one else has got hold of. Yet in our culture, the inside track is often exclusive, and getting on the inside track is not straightforward – it is often about how you were brought up, what school or university you went to, who you know, being a friend of a friend.

This week we return after a short break to our series for the autumn - The King and His Kingdom. We have already seen that Jesus is the King with authority, even authority to forgive sin – he is the centre point of human history. So this week, we are thinking about how anyone gets to receive this forgiveness. Who is invited? Who has the ticket? Who gets to be on the inside when it comes to Jesus?

We are going to be warned that the way in is not what we might expect. We are going to be encouraged to see the implications for each one of us. We are going to be given good news to share with a world where so many and so used to being excluded!

The Forgiveness Priority

In the next set of sessions we are considering four priorities that should govern or control how we ENGAGE with the world around us. Each of these priorities are foundational in the opening chapters of Mark’s Gospel (the next four weeks deliberately fit with our current sermon series in Mark). Last week, we considered ‘the priority of the kingdom’ that Jesus comes to proclaim (Mark 1:14-15). Jesus’ message is revolutionary; he is the king who has come to bring justice and salvation - the only response is to repent and believe. Last week’s section concluded with Jesus telling us that the reason why he had come to earth was to proclaim this astounding good news.

This week, Jesus tells us a second time why he has come, his second reason for entering the world. He has come to call sinners, offering forgiveness (Mark 2:17). So in this week’s session we are going to explore how the ‘forgiveness priority’ should shape our engagement with the world around us.

Left To Their Own Devices

On Tuesday 12 November, we will be running a video-based session from Care for the Family to help parents address the challenges of the online world that our children inhabit. This will be a great chance to come along explore the impact of the digital world on our children and discuss issues such as screen time, social media alongside the more serious issues of online bullying, grooming and pornography. We’ll be based at St Kea from 7.00-8.30pm during the regular Tuesday Night Youth group session – younger siblings are welcome to attend youth group that evening to allow parents to attend if needed.

Operation Christmas Child 2024

Kea and Christ Church are taking part again in Operation Christmas Child and will once again be a drop-off location (both at Kea Church and at Christ Church on a Sunday Morning). Please consider being part of this mission project this year – here’s how:

Pack a shoebox of gifts for a child and bring it to church during National Collection Week (10-17 November). To find out what can and can’t be included in the box, click on the image above.

Last year the youth group were able to create an additional 30+ boxes from your generous donations so if you are out shopping we’d be grateful if you could pop an extra bar of soap, packet of pens, pair of gloves etc in your shopping basket and bring them into church. There’s a festively-wrapped box at the back of church for donations. We are particularly keen to create boxes for boys aged 10-14 this year.

New for this year – we will be holding a ‘community packing party’ on Saturday 16th November 11-12.30 at Kea Church. If you would be able to help with welcoming and serving refreshments at this, please contact Jenie Macindoe (details can be found on Churchsuite).

Trinity Youth

This term the youth provision has been reprogrammed and we are very thankful to God for five weekly groups and two Sunday groups underway. On Monday morning a group for yr 12 & 13 girls meets near Truro College, on Monday evenings there currently are separate groups for yr 9-11 girls and boys, Tuesday Night Youth continues for those in yr 6-9 and a group for yr12 & 13 boys meets on a Thursday evening.

None of this would be possible without both the great team of volunteers and the regular giving of our church family, so a big thank you to all of you. We are always keen to encourage people to join the team, and it’s great to have a range of ages, experience and temperaments (so don’t count yourself out). We’d also love to recruit you to pray for these groups, and our youth weekend away later this week

Weekly Prayer Points

Each week there will be a few things for our church life and church family that we can join in praying for:

1. We pray for our young people this week as they head to the youth weekend away in Devon. We ask that they feel a real unity being away together, and that they meet Jesus, either for the first time or in a fresh way over the course of the weekend. We also ask for energy, excitement and expectation for our fantastic team of leaders who will be serving over the weekend.

2. This week we pray for the work of the Barnabus Fund who supports Christian communities, churches and individuals around the world who face persecution and discrimination because of their faith. Lord Jesus, please help us to remember those called to lead Your Church throughout the world, especially those serving in contexts of persecution or severe economic hardship. We thank You for their faithfulness in obeying their Divine calling and pray that You will ease their burden by surrounding them with godly servants to support them. Please enable their teaching and spiritual counsel to build Your Church as they trust You.

3. Thank you God for the provision of our Children’s work at St Kea. We thank you for all the people who serve in this ministry, leading our children in Your word each week. We pray as the children meet each week they grow closer to You.
